Interview: Wassim Saifi, Old Bulgarians

Old Bulgarians have proved to be a mighty force in the Hellenic Speedball League. Winning both the first events in the Division 1, they aim straight for the title of the Champion. We asked Old Bulgarians' team captain, Wassim Saifi, a couple of questions. And got a couple of answers back!

-Wassim, your team came up strong this year. Did you expect to do so well in the Greek League?
Yes my friend the team came more stronger then last year. Actually i was expecting this from the boys because we were practising very hard this winter.


-I’ ve seen you play since your very start –I think. You ‘re probably one of the fastest evolving teams in your country. How did you do this?
-We manage this with hard training and very big motivation. We all lose something in the name of paintball, so we can train and be able to participate in all tournaments this year. Actually YES we are the fastest evolving team in Bulgaria even that we are a team since two years.



-A question that interests all ‘ballers. You need to help us. You have your girls following you in your events. How did you achieve this? What do we do wrong?
-It will be my honour to help.
Actually it is very simple, just need to promise that you will take her shopping in Mediterranean Cosmos ! After that just smile and say yes to everything!
Haha I am joking of course. Our girls are more motivated then us because they see how hard we are training and how much it costs us.

-X-ball or 5-man?
-X-ball or 5-man! This is the question that interests all Greek teams and all Bulgarian teams too!
I can just tell about my team because every team has it own politic! We are 7 people if we play 5 man this mean that there will be somebody who will miss two-tree-four games and it is pointless to go and put all this cloths to play 3 games , you know ? If it’ s X-ball it will be more fun every one of us will play.
Actually to be honest we were planning to play X-ball this year in all Greek events because in Bulgaria there will not be X ball.... but the thing changes and we were forced to play 5man or nothing.



-Make a prediction, which team is the most likely to end up champion in Div. 1, except from yours of course!
-Every one in div 1 deserve to be 1-st . I can't predict such a thing it is very complicated...



-Old Bulgarians. You ‘re not old. How did you end up with that name?
-The name ... haha it is a long-long story.... but I will tell the story in the shortest way.
Our name first was Painthause but... after the first amateur tournament we have we decided that the name is like the magazine - Penthouse and we are not some porn stars ... so we start thinking for a name... for a solid name.

Even then we knew that one day we will play outside Bulgaria and we will make all it is possible to make the road for some young boys to play one day when we have big sponsors and a lot of money. Then one day the young boys will tell that the Old Bulgarians done this and make us players.



-Which events do you plan to play this year?
-We plan to play 10 tournaments this year 6- HSL and 4 - PPS.



-Anything else to add?
-Yes i want to add some things. I want to say one big THANK YOU for all of you : organisers , reffs , teams ...
You are making us to feel that we are playing in our country you give us friendship and good hospitality and we are very thankfull .
I wish everybody to fell like us. Because every time we come i know that we have more then 100 friends (players and organisers) who are waiting us to make some nice games.
